3/5
For some context about our stay. My husband and I travelled to Ærø to get marrried. We loved the breakfast and staff who were very friendly. There was even a residence cat who was too cute.
There was an Argentinian singer who sang most nights and this was lovely and really gave a great atmosphere. It's also great that you can also rent bikes through the hotel.
I am slightly disappointed by some parts of our stay however and will list them below. I want to make it clear however this does not mean booking here is not worth it. Just important to bear in mind for your booking/ consideration.
The heat:
1. Our biggest dissapointment that we had with the stay was the unbearable heat in the second floor rooms. We weren't in the rooms during the day of course, this heat was at night. As a solution we wanted to open the windows, however the numbers of spiders that lived on the outside of the windows became a running joke for us. We don't have a big problem with spiders but I for sure don't like them crawling on me at night (they literally did when we opened the windows.)
The room
2. Bring your own pillows. The pillows we slept were honestly the worse pillows I've ever experienced. The one option has barely any "filling" to actually be called a pillow. You had to scrunch it up and stay still to keep it all together. The second options were stuffed with what sounded like plastic bags.
2a. Oh and the sound of the doors slamming and the locks clicking throughout the night with guests coming in at all hours was very disruptive for sleep. Seems like it could be a very simple fix though.
Booking confusion
3. When we originally booked, we did not realise that we did not have our own bathroom. So we were disappointed to learn that we had to share. However, I will say that the bathrooms were always clean.
Stairs
4. This is a small thing for us but we were surprised when we checked in, that we were on the second floor. This wasn't a problem for us but they are relatively steeps stairs and during our stay we helped multiple elderly people with their luggage. I feel this is a very important thing to mention anywhere people can make a booking. Or perhaps help them up the stairs...
Overall, I feel we could have had a much more comfortable stay in their other rooms or at the camping place close to Søby, they had some lovely huts on the beach, or some other locations around Marstal and Søby. The price we paid for the accommodation we got feels like a small injustice and the website's protrayal of the room and space feels oversold (at least for the second floor rooms). If we stayed elsewhere, yes we would be sacrificing the atmosphere and breakfast but I would have done that for some more of the comforts.
Given this I am still grateful to the hotel for the stay.
